I was recently invited to brunch by a neighbour who loves entertaining. After I’d finished my baked French toast and decoratively cut melon pieces (tiny flowers of watermelon and hand-cut cantaloupe letters), I decided I never wanted to leave.

Working with an architect, my hostess had taken a staid century home and turned it into a sleek, light-filled modern home. The results were impressive, but what struck me most was how much I wanted to loll in the serene comfort she had cultivated. The carefully designed spaces were brimming with her personality. She loves sweets, so there was barely a surface without a bowl or vase full of brightly colored treats. As we wandered from room to room, she munched away, making me feel totally at home.
